Design Trends Survey Focuses on Home Layout and Use

 For the first time in three years, homes are decreasing in size, according to the American Institute of Architects’ latest Design Trends Survey that focused on overall home layout and use during the first quarter of the year. As a result, homeowners are focusing more attention on outdoor living space, including upscale landscaping, fireplaces, kitchens, courtyards, gazebos, swimming pools and tennis courts.

The survey also found a strong trend in homeowners’ need for accessibility, specifically wider hallways, fewer steps and single-floor designs that are attractive to baby boomers and those caring for aging parents or relatives. Along with accessibility, survey respondents said homeowners are looking for open layouts, less formal living space and more flexibility in their homes.
